Camping with Mrs. Melow in Music class 🔥
Mrs. Whitfords students created their own "working" fishing poles in STEAM lab and even caught some fish using magnetic hooks!
Welcome to Camp Read-a-lot! South has started their reading adventure! Please check your child's Friday Folder for lots of information about March is Reading Month!
We read Ten on the Sled (a fun wintery take on Ten in the Bed) in STEAM lab and then created sleds to hold ten "block characters". Testing them was such fun!
Second graders learned about weathering and erosion using magic tracks! They placed buttons, beads, and blocks on their "rivers" and then watched as their balls (water) moved the items with each roll. They drew before and after pictures to document how their rivers changed.
During our Nutrition class with Mrs. Horn, we were introduced to rainbow carrots and bell peppers on a bagel.🫑🥕🥯
Kindergarten students experience and learn math in a variety of ways. Today was "Skittle Math Day!" A very tasty way to classify by the attribute of color, practice counting skills, and compare using math vocabulary words "more," less," and "fewer."
And let's be honest, they were very yummy to eat when we finished!
💕☺️💕☺️💕☺️💕☺️💕☺️💕
These 2 were so proud to find red words on their shirts and read to them to me 🩶🖤
Second graders read The Day it Rained Hearts in STEAM and then constructed nets to catch hearts that were "falling" in the lab!
Our AMAZING principal, Mrs. Beth Vozar, visited our class today and read us the funniest story named, "The Book With No Pictures!"
Our class absolutely giggled throughout the whole book.
Thank you Mrs. Vozar for spending time with us!

This is a reminder that there is no school for students tomorrow, Monday, February 12, 2024. We look forward to seeing students back on Tuesday!
Our Junior Jacket ticket winners for the week!! We love celebrating our students for following our school rules: Bee Respectful, Bee Responsible, and Bee Safe!
“EEKK” 📕
Elbow to elbow, knee to knee reading with a partner. Working together and learning at the same time!
Last week, our 2nd graders had a great trip to North School's STEAM Lab to collaborate with 4th grade students. First, they used MilkyWay bars to demonstrate how plates shift to make mountains. Next, students experimented with a paper mountain, markers, and eye droppers to see erosion in action. Last, 4th graders demonstrated how mountains erode and change using sand and different balls. The wooden ball represented light rain, the marble represented heavy rain, and the steel ball represented a flood. Thank you, Mrs. Hindbaugh-Marr for organizing this opportunity.
We are so proud to highlight the winners of our yearbook cover contest at South Elementary! These students creatively designed the cover all on their own. Congratulations!
In kindergarten we learn letters, sounds, words, and reading! We learn numbers, shapes, addition, and subtraction in math.
But even more important are the skills we learn when we share blocks, compliment a classmate on their picture, and learn how to communicate with others.
Building with blocks, creating art, and enjoying talking with our friends is what kindergarten learning is REALLY about!

All the hearts for February 💕
Mrs. Whitford's students read the story Blizzard in STEAM lab and made snowshoes like the boy used in the story!
Ms. Bahr met with all students today to introduce Junior Jacket tickets!! These tickets will be used to acknowledge kids "caught" BEEing awesome each day at South! On Fridays, we will choose one lucky winner from each class to receive special recognition for the week.
